Climate science and sustainable production education is an essential step towards environmental stewardship across the film and television industry. The Ontario Green Screen initiative offers Sustainable Film Production Fundamentals training to all film workers in Ontario to better understand the climate emergency we face and how to make a difference on set.
Ontario Green Screen offers this course for free, delivered virtually as both a facilitated and as a self-directed course to allow participation regardless where in the province you live. While the self-directed course allows participants to complete the course at their own pace, the facilitated course allows participants to share ideas and collaborate with the instructors and other participants. The self-directed course can be completed in approximately 1.25 hours, while the facilitated course will take approximately 1.75 hours.

Sustainable Film Production Fundamentals Training
Section 1: Climate Change: An Introduction
This section provides you with the tools needed to better understand the global factors feeding into climate change and the direct and indirect effects of changing weather patterns on our planet.
Section 2: Film Industry & Government Responses to Climate Change
How are all levels of government working together to address climate change? What is the collective industry action towards climate change?
Section 3: How Our Productions Impact Climate Change
This section outlines what our industry has learned about its environmental impacts and how they contribute to global warming. What are the biggest impact areas and how can we reduce them?
Section 4: Embedding Sustainable Solutions on Production
This section (broken out into two parts) provides tactics and actions to help you make better choices for yourself and your production while also saving money and making lasting changes; covering a wide variety of sustainability tools and resources available through Ontario Green Screen and across the industry.

To enroll in the self-directed version, please click here and sign up as a new account on the TalentLMS training platform. After verifying your email, you will be able to view the Course Catalog where you can enroll in the Sustainable Film Production Fundamentals course and begin learning at your own pace! Upon completion, you will receive your certificate through email, along with sustainability resources.
A couple handy tips to help you go through the TalentLMS training platform:
• To start each section, press play on each video. You won’t be able to skip ahead, but there might be a slight 30 second wait before you can move to the next section, so hang tight while the system loads.
• For the quizzes/knowledge checks, you will require an 100% pass rate in order to move onto the next section. If you get below this mark, you can go back and rewatch the videos, if necessary, until you get the wrong answers right.
• Please note that following completion of the course, you will be sent a certificate of completion, a list of sustainability resources mentioned in the training.
Carbon Calculation Fundamentals Training
The new Carbon Calculation Fundamentals free training offers a comprehensive assessment of the utility and benefits of carbon calculators to the film and television industry, along with a better understanding of the two most commonly used calculators across North America. The training will discuss how these tools can illuminate which areas of a production are causing the greatest emissions and various strategies to most effectively reduce your production’s carbon footprint.
Note: Online training participants will receive an invitation via email with a link and login password for the training session.
