Understanding the International Landscape for Canadian Documentaries: Treaty Coproduction, Promotion and Sales
This report by the Documentary Organization of Canada examines the opportunities for Canadian documentary producers to coproduce, promote and sell their works in the international market. In addition to stakeholder perspectives and a jurisdictional scan of coproduction supports in other countries, it provides recommendations for further supports to help the Canadian documentary sector find greater success on the international stage.
Canadian Ebooks in K-12 Education
This study by the Association of Canadian Publishers seeks to provide guidance to Canadian publishers on how best to make their reading resources accessible in digital formats to the school market in Canada. The report addresses the specific challenges presented by COVID-19, as well as discussing strategies for digital resources more broadly.
Women in View on Screen 2021 analyzes the representation of women among key roles (writers, directors, cinematographers, producers and showrunners) in scripted English language television series funded by the CMF, and feature films funded by Telefilm Canada. The report also provides data and analysis on representation of Indigenous women and Women of Colour in these roles.

Statistics Canada has released national culture indicators for the first quarter of 2021. This release provides information on GDP, output, and jobs. The summary article also outlines the impact of COVID-19 on culture and sport GDP and employment.
A new study by VICE Media Group and Ontario Creates, The Future of the Creative Workforce, has been released. This study identifies the career toolkit needed by Gen Z and young Gen Y individuals to ensure their future success working in the creative industries.
CREATIVE INDUSTRIES POLICY AND FUNDING
In June 2021, the Ontario government updated the blue box recycling program. Collection will be expanded over the next five years, and what materials can be recycled has been updated and standardized. The change also transfers the costs of the program from taxpayers to the producers of products and packaging.
OTHER NEWS & UPDATES
The Ontario government has appointed Ontario’s Task Force on Women and the Economy, to address the unique and disproportionate economic barriers women face. The Task Force is examining supporting women in entry/re-entry to the workforce, entrepreneurship, and entering fields in which women are underrepresented. Ontario Creates has made a submission in response to the advisory committee’s call for comments.
A Workforce Recovery Advisory Committee has also been appointed, to provide recommendations on economic recovery, strengthening Ontario’s competitive position, and supporting workers. Ontario Creates has made a submission in response to the advisory committee’s call for comments.
The Supreme Court of Canada has dismissed appeals from both parties in the legal dispute between York University and Access Copyright, leaving the Federal Court of Appeal’s decision that tariffs certified by the Copyright Board are not enforceable in place.
