  • The (opens new window)2019 Provincial Budget was released on April 11, containing a number of items which impact the creative industries and Ontario Creates. The government will also introduce changes to the digital media tax credit to lower the labour threshold for annual filing. A Film and Television Advisory Panel will be established to advise on issues relating to the industry and its growth. Finally the Ontario Music Fund is being reduced from $15 million to $7 million annually.
  • The federal Minister of Small Business and Export Promotion has announced that the federal government will invest $5 million in the Toronto Region Board of Trade through FedDev Ontario. They will also invest $1.7 million under the Export Diversification Strategy, also for the Toronto Region Board of Trade.
  • The federal budget has promised an additional $60 million in funding for music programs, including an additional $20 million to the Canada Music Fund for a total recent funding increase of $40.7 million.
  • The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage has published their (opens new window)Shifting Paradigms report, looking at payment and royalty options for artists and others in the creative industries. It also discusses the regulation of streaming services and combatting piracy, among other issues.
  • The Ontario provincial government will be launching a plan to protect intellectual property generated within the province, and maximize its commercialization. They will be creating an expert panel on the subject, and an online consultation process. A final report will be delivered to the government in December 2019.
